Abolishes The Present State Of Things

History has shown us eloquently that if we do choose hope, solidarity and equality, we must not beg for them: we must take them. This is what we mean by combative syndicalism.

CLASSE can rightly claim victory tonight. Not only have they reversed the tuition fee hike imposed upon them, but they have created the situation here it is no longer tenable for the author of that policy to either be either PM or leader of the Liberal party.

The militancy, skill and the political nuance of the Canadian students is to their vast credit. Their ability to keep their campaign on a consistently radical basis - opposed to the increases in tuition fees as a minor instance of the general commodification of capitalism that neoliberalism accelerates. Their embrace of the local communities. Their commitment to ensuring their internal politics and structure reflect their political vision. Their ability to openly break the law. Just to begin with.

Like the global protests of 2011, what CLASSE show is the sheer contingency of social reality - the openness of the world. Through militancy - the ability to “keep going” - Badiou’s ethical act - they abolished the conditions under which they operated, for the issue they fought against and achieved victory. It is this ability we must learn again for ourselves.

We call communism the real movement which abolishes the present state of things. The conditions of this movement result from the premises now in existence.
